According to the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery, Internet addiction is described as an impulse control disorder which does not involve use of an intoxicating drug and is very similar to pathological gambling.
Signs of Internet Addiction include the following:
- Preoccupation with the Internet - You think about your recent online activity or even think about what you are going to do the next time you go online.
- You spend a lot of time using the internet until you are satisfied.
- You try to control/cut back/stop using the internet repeatedly.
- You feel restless, moody, depressed or irritated when trying to cut down on using the internet.
- You spend more time using the internet than originally intended (for example, you wanted to spend only 2 hours using the internet, but in the end, you spent 3 hours or even more).
- You get into trouble or risk losing your relationship, job, education or career opportunities because of spending too much time on the internet.
- You lie to your family members, therapist, or others to cover up the actual usage of internet.
- You use the internet as a way to escape from problems or to relieve a dysphoric mood (examples like feeling of hopelessness, guilt, anxiety or depression).
As for myself, it's a good thing that I can control myself with internet usage. I make sure I limit myself to a few hours of usage and not too much that I neglect my school work or my that it would affect my daily life.
Internet addiction is quite common nowadays because you can do so many things with the internet. You can surf millions of websites, play online games, connect with people on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Friendster etc, check emails like Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc and many many more.
Thus, controlling one's self with using the internet is a good thing as too much time spent at the computer/laptop isn't good for one's health. Limiting the usage of internet is one way that will help and you have to enforce it on yourself, if not, it will never work and you carry on using the internet for many hours.

hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeletei agree that iternet addiction is common nowadays. I have some friends who can just sit in front of the computer sufring the web and playing online games the whole day. I myself am not addicted to the internet as i can control myself from using too much of the internet.
internet addiction is a huge problem many face nowadays. Due to this addiction, many have to go through professional counseling to manage their addictions.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the internet is an essential and useful tool. However, we must know where to draw a line when using it.

To Loo Weiren: Hey Weiren! Yeah, I have friends who are so addicted too. But at least you are not addicted and can control yourself. That's at least good.
ReplyDeleteTo Annwei: Hey Annwei! Yeah, I agree with you. There's always a certain line for everything and some people do cross that line.
Hi Nicholas
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to believe that people can become addicted to the Internet. I personally find that when I'm surfing, it tends to get boring after a while. What do these people DO online? They can't be just staring at Google the whole day. Social networking sites to blame?

Hey Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteWow,from the points of possible signs of internet addiction that you listed out, 2-3 points described me well. Its kind of scary to think that I am actually addicted to the internet. Sometimes I do wonder what the world would be like without internet.
Nevertheless, I did try to limit myself to facing my laptop too much because I realized its much more fun to be outside to hangout and do cool activities with family and friends, considering I am the type of person who prefers to move around rather than sitting still.

Hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteGreat points you came up with, and just like Farahin, I can relate to a couple of them, especially the one where I use the internet for longer than I had intended.
I guess there really are a lot of distractions with the internet, like those you mentioned such as social networking sites and online games. It gets really hard when I try to get some work done on the computer simply because of all these distractions, which leads to me using the internet longer than I had intended.
I think it takes a lot of self-control and discipline to set aside time for work and leisure when using the internet.

Hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to see how new media can cause addictions. But is an Internet addiction a legitimate medical problem or just a lack of willpower? With no chemical reason in the brain for this addiction, unlike say smoking where the brain craves nicotine, Internet addiction could only be fabricated in the minds of "addicts". Still, it is interesting to see how new media can affect medical science.

Hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteWith so many different things we can do online nowadays, perhaps spending hours in front of the computer no longer qualifies as addiction? Afterall, the Internet is now a platform for reading, learning, viewing, playing, listening, socialising, etc - we need more time than before to "cover" all these activities.
But you're right that we must be careful not to cross the line of risking relationships, jobs, education or career opportunities for more time on the Internet.

Hi Nic!
ReplyDeleteWow, your signs of internet addiction is really detailed! I think that because of online games and other games like Sims3, more people are getting addicted to the computer, staying online at times where they should be sleeping and all. It's not wrong to play games but I think one should exercise some self-control in order to not over step the boundaries a human body have.

Hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sharing, and based on your signs of Internet addiction, i can say i am addict on using Internet to play online games..hahax..but most of time, i think it is a way for me to release the pressure.
I also use internet to do some research and E-learing....so, i think internet addiction is nothing, but how you treat the situation.

Hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteI agree that internet addiction is very common nowadays.
But I think that it may come in both good or bad ways. Whether the content that we surfing is useful and educational or just for the fun and not very useful.

Hi Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteLike Mark, I can't imagine being addicted to the internet for personal enjoyment. I usually spend it researching for studies and can't wait to stop using it.
I can relate to "withdrawal symptoms," however, or the stress I feel when cut-off from the internet during my work. I think internet addiction, i.e. self-produced reliance on the internet has another side, i.e. society-produced reliance. Studies and work are almost inseperable from the internet, with many institutions using online platforms like TP's Ole or Vbus to communicate.
In a way, society addicts us to the internet in terms of our work and we should have alternative methods of communication whenever possible.

Hi Nick!
ReplyDeleteInternet addiction is a big problem generally. It is because there are so many things that we can search for. It is free, very accessible that is why mostly everyone will get addicted to internet.
But the sad thing is that most of us get addicted not because of important work instead because of entertainment. We can spend hours for entertainment but spend lesser for our work.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree that the Internet is definitely an addiction that is close to impossible to kick. It's become such a major part of our lives. Google Is Your Best Friend. Which brings me to another point, if we can find practically everything online, why are we cramming our brains with studies and memorising stuff when we can easily Google it.
